https://www.ejournal.stisdarussalam.ac.id/index.php/jet/article/view/261

This study aims to examine the transformation of the role of pesantren caregivers (kyai) in character education amidst contemporary social dynamics. As a traditional Islamic educational institution, the pesantren holds a unique position as a moral and spiritual stronghold in society. However, the evolving times require adaptation and renewal in the approach to character education by pesantren leaders. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method through a literature review. The findings indicate that the role of pesantren caregivers has expanded beyond traditional religious teaching to include roles as social change agents, psychological mentors, and moral guides in the context of globalization and digitalization. This transformation is evident in curriculum renewal, more humanistic communication approaches, and active engagement in addressing social challenges such as moral crises, individualism, and the erosion of national values. Thus, while maintaining their strategic role in character building, pesantren caregivers now implement more contextual and responsive strategies in line with current developments.
Hardiyatullah Hardiyatullah

https://www.ejournal.stisdarussalam.ac.id/index.php/jet/article/view/268

This study aims to examine the concept of character education for santri (Islamic boarding school students) within the leadership tradition of pesantren caregivers in the midst of dynamic social changes. Pesantren has long been recognized as a traditional Islamic educational institution that emphasizes character formation through role modeling and habituation of moral values. However, the contemporary era—marked by technological advancement, cultural globalization, and shifting social values—requires a reinterpretation and transformation of the caregivers’ role in fulfilling their educational function. Using a qualitative approach through library research, this study explores how character values such as humility, sincerity, discipline, and responsibility are instilled within the framework of traditional leadership, and how those values are adapted to changing social realities. The findings reveal that pesantren caregivers play a critical role as value transformation agents who preserve tradition while adaptively responding to the challenges of the times. Character education in pesantren remains relevant as long as caregivers adjust their leadership approach and methods to the evolving social context of the santri generation.
Husnul Hotimah

2026-08-072026-08-07111120The Character Education from the Perspective of Kiai Leadership: A Conceptual Study of the Role of Islamic Boarding School Caregivers
https://www.ejournal.stisdarussalam.ac.id/index.php/jet/article/view/269

This study aims to examine character education from the perspective of the kiai’s leadership as the caregiver of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). In the pesantren tradition, character education is the core of santri development, carried out through role modeling, habituation of moral values, and direct interaction between the kiai and the students. The kiai’s charismatic and value-based leadership plays a central role in shaping students’ character and personality. However, amidst rapid social changes and the influx of digital culture, this traditional leadership model faces new challenges that require adaptive and transformational capabilities from pesantren caregivers. Using a library research approach, this study explores how the concept and practice of character education are implemented through the leadership of the kiai, and how their relevance is maintained in today’s changing social landscape. The findings show that the kiai’s leadership remains a vital element in santri character education, as long as it integrates traditional values with contextual approaches responsive to the dynamics of the times.
Muslim Muslim
